November 25th is a good day… for queers to become lesbians

So, I’m deciding I like November 25th. Today is two months since Lin’s 43rd birthday – she’s now 518 months old. I hope she doesn’t read this, because it won’t excite her. But it also means that she’s only 4 months from her half-birthday, which is one of those silly things we celebrated in undergrad … Continue reading

Question of the day: How long did it take for someone to write the word “homonormativity”? 1995: “In a society whose institutions embody a presumption of heteronormativity and homo deviance, arguing that we are just like everyone else convinces no one. Further, the argument may not be true: we are just like heteros in the … Continue reading

“In the case of gay marriage, the push for state-sanctioned kinship reconsolidates the exclusionary practices of the institution of marriage. This move recodes “good” forms of national kinship (monogamous, consumptive, privatized) while punishing those that fall outside of them, particularly those forms of racialized and classed kinship that continue to be the target of state … Continue reading

Thesis Proposal 2.0

Okay, so this went through some revisions once again, and here’s something more like what the actual topic will look like – it’ll get polished over the next week, and then I’ll get started actually framing the conversation and writing the freaking literature review, gathering the data to be analyzed, and voila, instant thesis! As … Continue reading

more thesis thinking

What follows is my half of an exchange with my thesis advisor/committee chair. I chose him, particularly, because his views are not queer, at all, actually, and his questions challenge me to really evaluate and analyze what it is I believe, say, write, and think. This, I think, is valuable. I have added some things … Continue reading

another rich f*** gives money to HRC

Ok… so Bruce Bastian gave money to the HRC. Not just money, but ::conjure dr. evil here:: one million dollars :: press pinky to lip:: I’m quite beginning to think the organization is evil. The more I read and the more I pay attention, the more I think the organization is simply trying to tell … Continue reading

Currently Reading: Queer Phenomenology

This one I’m just getting into. Mostly, I’m enjoying Ahmed’s description of queer tables. It’s a total mindfuck, like reading CA Conrad (whom I love) – see Deviant Propulsion and (Soma)tic Midge. All good reads should fuck your mind like this one. I keep thinking most kids were picky eaters, but I’m a picky reader. … Continue reading

Currently Reading: Virtual Equality

Re-reading, actually. It’s Urvashi Vaid’s critique of the gay and lesbian rights movement, from an insider’s perspective. I remember reading it a few years ago, for a class, actually, and thinking it was of very little value. What a pretentious little fuck I was, to tell the truth.
