The paradox of gay marriage rallies

Give this one a thought… it’s giving me pause these days:

At gay marriage rallies – rallies in support of gay marriage – people chant “separation of church and state.” Yet they are attempting to attain the right to marriage. The government gives ministers (of churches) the right to preside over marriage ceremonies and legitimate the state contract (“by the power vested in me by the state of….” for example) – the ultimate entanglement of church and state.

So the paradox is: You can either have the separation of church and state or you can have marriage, but as it stands right now, you may not have both – in fact, you cannot have both because the Doctor is not here to fix the space-time continuum rip that would happen from bridging a paradox of this magnitude.

It’s not just the South

A Flaming Cross for Christmas? Only if youre willing to donate $81.85 to the American Family Association.

A Flaming Cross for Christmas? Only if you're willing to donate $81.85 to the American Family Association.

The American Family Association is selling this: a flaming cross for your front yard for Christmas. Why, you ask? Well, I can’t be sure, exactly why they would sell this kind of crap for Christmas – except that maybe they’re buying into Bill O’Reilly’s crap about there being a war on Christmas. Or perhaps they’ve just now caught on that buying all this crap at the Christmas season isn’t exactly what Christ or Christmas are about… but wait, they’re selling this crap, so nope – they still don’t get it. They’re just as commercialist, capitalist, consumerist, and profit-driven as Wal-Mart. Yet they purport to be the defender of family values. Yep, I want my kid to believe that they need a burning cross on their front yard to prove how close they are to God. Below is what their Web site said about this thing – and why you should buy it. Evidence of what I’m up against…

This came in my inbox today… I’m sad to say it came from my aunt. She also forwarded me a lot of things about Obama being a Muslim, and sounded quite horror-stricken to find out I voted for him (and not Hillary) in the primaries… I post it here because I don’t believe a word of it – but I do believe that it is evidence of what poor white folks from southern trailer parks deal with when they attempt to live by new rules…

WARNING: After the jump is an e-mail forward entitled “Proud to be White.” It contains language that may not be suitable for sensitive ears – and that really should never be appropriate. Proceed with caution. Please also know that I don’t believe a word of this bullshit… Read more »

Putting my queer shoulder to the wheel

So, I tried for a few days to ignore the JoinTheImpact.com stuff coming through my inbox and across the news desk. I tried. I’m a full-time graduate student – I commute to school two days a week in Johnson City and I spend the entire day there both days. I teach a class of college sophomores and juniors. I have a wife. Two dogs. Three cats. And I work full time as Associate Publisher of OIA. My life is really gay – really queer, actually. In fact, only on the days when I’m at school do I really have conversations with people who are not part of the LGBTQ community. Read more »
